Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) boss Stephen Hester has been given a £963,000 bonus in shares, which has been heavily criticised.

RBS is 82% owned by UK taxpayers and the company which runs it for the government - UK Financial Investments have stated the bonus reflected Mr Hester's work towards rebuilding RBS in 2011.

According to David Fleming, the Unite union national officer, and the TUC - it is utterly unacceptable for an RBS senior banker who is responsible for sacking over 21,000 workers to be rewarded in this way.

Foreign Office minister Mr Browne has told the BBC's Question Time - Mr Hester is effectively a public servant in a bank that is owned by the country, he needs to think like a public servant who has a duty to his country, not just his own wealth.

He also added that Mr Hester was paid more in 3 days than a soldier serving in Afghanistan received in a year.
