Two Tier State Pensions
Most employees build up two levels of State Pension. Most self employed people only build up one as they pay less national insurance.
- Level 1: The Basic State Pension
- Level 2 (for benefits before 6 April 2012): The State Second Pension Scheme (before this SERPs and before that the Graduated scheme). If you have ever seen words such as GMP, Protected Rights you may have been contracted out of SERPS or contracted out of the State Second Pension
